ABOUT ME
My background
Hello, my name is Federica Aina and I am a freelance translator, subtitler and dubbing script adapter based in Italy.
My decision to pursue a career in translation and interpreting was driven by my knack for languages.
I was 11 when I first travelled to France for a two-week cultural exchange program.
It was quite a culture shock: nobody in my host family spoke Italian and I had just started learning French…
But this immersive dive into French language and culture turned out to be a life-changing experience for me.
Overcoming the language barrier and stepping out of my comfort zone was the most challenging yet most rewarding thing that I had ever done.
This “adventure” played a crucial role in my personal growth and mindset: that’s when my passion for languages really took off.
Since then, I continued travelling abroad – mainly to English-, French- and Spanish-speaking countries – as often as possible.
Spending time in a foreign country, and having to interact with native speakers in your second language, can significantly improve language proficiency and broaden your mind.
“With languages, you are at home anywhere.”
– Edward De Waal
For me, the most fulfilling aspect of speaking multiple languages has always been communicating with other people in their language.
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart”.
– Nelson Mandela
When it came to choosing my area of study for upper secondary education, I took English, French, Economics and Law as major subjects and Spanish as an elective subject.
This educational foundation played a pivotal role in shaping my career, as it allowed me to pursue my passion for languages while developing a solid knowledge of legal and business principles and rules.
I continued my studies with a Bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting (2008), a European Master’s degree in Audiovisual Translation (2010) and, finally, a post-master’s degree in Specialised Translation (2022).
I have been translating professionally since 2010.
Immediately after obtaining my MA, I started working as a commercial assistant and in-house translator for a French multinational company, and I have been a freelance translator since 2021.
As a professional translator, my main goal is to help my clients communicate and reach their objectives, by providing them with high-quality translations, accurately conveying the exact meaning, tone and cultural context of the source text into the target language, and ensuring that the final output reads well (or speaks naturally) for their intended audience.
“Translation is not a matter of words only: it is a matter of making intelligible a whole culture”
– Anthony Burgess
